Stefano Fiorina’s project began in 2016 as a visual experimentation experience, born from an exploration of lettering and graffiti—two art forms deeply rooted in urban culture. The core idea merges these techniques with photography and digital art, giving rise to a new visual language centered around a natural element as unusual as it is fascinating: red cabbage.
The goal was to use photography to evoke signs, writings, and graffiti, then reinterpret them in an organic key. After observing various materials—both natural and artificial—Fiorina found red cabbage to be the perfect subject: a vegetable that, upon close inspection, always seems to evoke imaginary worlds in those who look at it.
The cabbage was repeatedly sliced in search of ideal patterns; the resulting micro-compositions were photographed in macro and transformed into standalone visual elements, resembling contemporary graffiti or ancient illustrated tablets, rich in symbols and impressions inspired by the cabbage’s natural forms.
Stefano Fiorina’s work stems from exploring fantastical imagery, using recycled and repurposed materials, and moving between photography, sculpture, and site-specific installations. Fiorina actively involves the public in experiential workshops, encouraging collaboration in the creation of collective works that tell visual stories capable of transporting viewers into imaginary worlds. His artistic practice reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and participatory art, constantly seeking new ways to combine aesthetics, ethics, and human interaction.
The project is part of TANGLE – Visual Culture in Urban Art, curated by Parsec and Andrea Gianfanti in collaboration with the Department of Business Sciences at the University of Bologna.
