Wednesday 6 December
EXHIBITION THE HORSE WOMAN by Chaerin Im
Opening h 18
What happens when the magnificent horse woman arrives in Korea’s patriarchal society?
On show are the originals of I AM A HORSE (나는 말이다), the latest film by South Korean experimental director Chaerin Im.
The film tells an imaginative story of women born with half the body of a horse and a tiger. These vagabond women are too fierce and free to live up to their role as daughter, wife and mother in patriarchal society. The story is inspired by the Korean birth dreams, Tae-mong (태몽), of her mother when she was pregnant with her and her twin sister.
The frames on display are handmade, mixing Korean ink brush, home lithography, straight ahead animation and stop motion photography.

Chaerin Im is a South Korean director who has made experimental animation her language of choice. Her films question the power relationship between genders, through South Korean myths and traditions, to arrive at a questioning of patriarchal society and sexual imagery.
Chaerin carries out a unique research on visual language that sees the contamination of the most disparate techniques: from traditional ones such as the Korean brush or cyanotype, through artisanal techniques such as ‘kitchen printing’, a home printing technique made with the use of aluminium foil and Coca Cola, to digital techniques such as 3D modelling.
With her unique and disruptive films, Chaerin has made her way into a predominantly male-dominated world and her films are now screened at all the world’s biggest festivals.
The exhibition is part of a series of three events dedicated to the experimental filmmaker and animator Chaerin Im and South Korean animation. All events are FREE.
