Rat film (2016) – Theo Anthony
In his critically acclaimed directorial debut, Theo Anthony uses the rat to delve into Baltimore’s dark and complicated history. What begins as an examination of our interactions with rats – portraits of citizens affected by rats, rats as test subjects in laboratories, the development of rat poison – becomes a deeper exploration of Baltimore. Anthony investigates the city’s history and the systemic racism that created the low-income, majority-black neighbourhoods that are still plagued by rats today.

Theo Anthony is a writer, photographer and filmmaker currently based in Baltimore. His work has been featured by The Atlantic, Vice, Agence-France Presse (AFP) and other international publications. His films have premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Locarno International Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival and Anthology Film Archives. In 2015, he was named one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Cinema” by Filmmaker Magazine.
