Walk
Boschilla
Saturday, September 20
Walking, crossing a territory on foot, represents for Boschilla a way of researching, recounting, and studying the mountains: a mode of knowledge, an attitude toward the surrounding environment, a lens through which to observe the world, a tool for encountering and listening to the territories and the communities that live there. Together we will follow a path that leads from the historic center of Castiglione dei Pepoli to Abetaia (Rifugio Ranuzzi-Segni) to watch Irene Adorni’s performance.
Through ancient chestnut groves, mixed woods that mark the boundary between the wild and the tamed, ruins, and old metati (chestnut drying huts), we will try to restore the complexity and distinctive characteristics of these mountains.
Meeting point and departure for the excursion: 9:00 am in Castiglione dei Pepoli, Piazza della Libertร .
Route: Castiglione dei Pepoli, Crocicchie, Casale, Rifugio Ranuzzi-Segni, Castiglione dei Pepoli.
Round trip duration: 2.5 hours (excluding performance)
Elevation gain: 280 meters
Distance: 6 km
Level: E (medium difficulty)
Sunday, September 21
The route starts from the historic center of Castiglione and gradually descends towards Lake Santa Maria, an artificial reservoir built in the last century for hydroelectric purposes. Together we will cross the paved streets of the village to reach the South African War Cemetery, one of the many World War II memorials located in the Apennines along the Gothic Line. From there, a dirt road (the CAI 029 trail) will take us through wooded areas, panoramic meadows, and scattered houses until we cross the โVia della Lana e della Setaโ (Wool and Silk Road), a contemporary trail that retraces the ancient trade route of the Bolognese mountains that crosses into Tuscany. The route ends on the shores of the Santa Maria reservoir, which, together with Suviana, Brasimone, and Pavana, is part of a complex of interconnected reservoirs that produce electricity for the Bologna mountains. The lake, also known as S. Damiano, is now a place of refreshment in a renaturalized oasis, lived in and traversed by human and non-human communities, a meeting point and reference point for the area that will host the creative writing workshop led by Wu Ming 2.
Meeting point and departure for the excursion: 9:00 am in Castiglione dei Pepoli, Piazza della Libertร .
Route: Castiglione dei Pepoli, Farmadiccia, Lake Santa Maria.
Duration: 1 hour
Elevation gain (downhill): 170 meters
Distance: 2.5 km
Level: T (easy)
To participate, we remind you of the importance of carefully assessing your physical condition and your aptitude for mountain walking in relation to the characteristics of the itinerary. It is necessary to bring sufficient water and it is mandatory to have hiking boots and suitable clothing.
Boschilla is a multimedia research and production project focused on the mountains and inland areas, born out of numerous journeys on foot. In 2014, it launched the radio program โBoschilla โ The Sound of Your Stepโ, initiating collaborations with filmmakers, writers, and specialized publishers, with the goal of narrating the territory through an interdisciplinary lens.
In 2016, the project โRagnateleโ (“Webs”) was created โ a research journey into the abandoned and depopulated villages of the Apennines. Thanks to this work, Boschilla was among the winners of โFuorirottaโ, a grant program led by filmmaker Andrea Segre. In 2018, the project gave rise to the documentary film “Entroterra. Memories and Desires of the Lesser Mountains”, which had its world premiere at the 66th Trento Film Festival, and went on to win Best Documentary and Best Screenplay at the 19th Lucania Film Festival. In October 2018, based on the same research that inspired the film, Boschilla published the book โRagnateleโ. Since 2019, Boschilla has collaborated with the Lagolandia festival, which promotes the Bolognese Apennine region. Within this context, in 2020, the School of Political Ecology in the Mountains was founded, conceived by Boschilla in partnership with Articolture.
